The competition is open to students registered in a collegiate level design program anywhere
in the world and those who have graduated in 2009.

a new boating/marine concept, design, or solution to a specific problem. *Note: No models please – however a
photo of a model is acceptable and encouraged.
Maximum size of photos and printouts is 13" x 19" (8½" x 11" preferred.)
|
|
The design proposal should answer a specific question relative to any of the following criteria:
Use of design as a way to… increase sales; cut costs; demonstrate social responsibility; or heighten
awareness of boating.
|
|
CD/DVD submissions must include color printouts no larger than 13" x 19"
(8½" x 11" preferred.)

The goal is to spotlight design as a “creative” resource rather than a function of engineering. As such,
the MDRA requires that each submission is accompanied by a written (300 words or less, brevity appreciated)
statement explaining how the design proposal achieves its
purpose.
A release announcing all winning entries, top finalists and their design schools will be distributed to the
media and displayed at marine industry events throughout the year.
The decision of the judges is final and only properly submitted entries will be considered.
The $25,000 Pinnacle Schorarship will be awarded to the top design overall,$15,000 to the winning student and $10,000 to the school.
For the $5,000 Formula Scholarship – $3,000 will be awarded to the student and $2,000 to the school.
For the $5,000 Mastercraft Scholarship – $3,000 will be awarded to the student and $2,000 to the school.
Jack Telnack, former head of corporate design for Ford Motor Company, will lead a panel of design judges. During his tenure at Ford,
Telnack was described by the New York Times as one of the country’s “most influential designers.” Telnack headed the design team that
developed the famous aero look embodied in the original Taurus. He worked on the design of the new Ford Thunderbird and has developed
and consulted on various design projects in the marine industry. Mr. Telnack will be inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in
October, 2008.
Brian Rossi is a noted automotive designer, and was a design executive of Ford Corporate Design. He was a founding member of Ford’s
first Australian Design Studio and spearheaded numerous high profile design projects in his more than 40-year career with Ford. Rossi
has retired, but remains active in the areas of automotive and boat design.
The judging committee (subject to availability) will meet in late September to select the winners on the basis of outstanding achievement
in an original marine design project.
Each entry must fall into one of the following categories:
Powerboat Design, Sailboat Design, or Other Marine Applications - This includes: interior design, safety and rescue, docks,
piers, recreational and underwater devices or concepts that are not a boat but still related to the marine industry.
An entry can receive more than one scholarship. Example: an entry could win the Pinnacle Scholarship and be the Formula
scholarship winner also.
